nursery nurse
My role as a Nursery Nurse means that I am responsible for providing the highest standard of care and education by ensuring the children have stimulating activities in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage.
In order to achieve this I ensure my arrival at the nursery is 10/15 minutes before my shift starts so I am able to organise myself.
At the start of my shift I go in to my room, if I am on the early shift I sign in and start to set up the room by placing table top activities out, prepare the sand and water trays and carpet areas.
I then check the register to the number of children that are due in that day including any extras we may have booked to attend. Once I know who is in that day I fill out the forms for the day which include Nappy chart, Sleep chart and Dietary form which I hand in to the cook from the kitchen. I collect cups to set up the drinking water station in the room. Also I carry out a daily risk assessment to check Health and Safety within the room.
As the children and parents arrive we greet them and find out how they are and write down any messages the parent gives us in our message book, we then encourage the child to come and start an activity.
If I am on a later shift when I enter the room I greet everyone and speak to my team to find out how the morning went and if any of my key children parents have left messages.
Once all of my key children are in I start my focused activities which I have planned round the individual needs of the child. This will help me ensure that I give the highest standard of care and learning support to my key children whether this be inside or outside in the play area.
Whilst the children are involved in their daily activities I carry out written observation both on spontaneous and planned activities to record their development so that I am able to monitor their progress within the 6 areas of learning. I store all observations on the child in their learning journey along with the evaluation and next step for that observation / activity so that when I hold my 6 weekly parents meeting I can show them the progress their child has made.
I encourage the children to recognise the importance of personal care by supporting with both actions and conversation that is appropriate for their level of understanding to assist them in washing hands/ faces, feeding themselves, toilet training/ nappy changes and sleep time ensuring that I follow kidsunlimited policy and procedure.
My responsibilities include the day to day operation of the room with regards to cleaning duties which are to clean/sterilize equipment used by the children after meals and messy activities and to set out the beds for children that sleep.
I encourage good team work within the setting by co-operating fully with my co workers and any other professional. I establish a good partnership between parents/carers of the children which makes it easier to provide feedback on day to day progress of the children. It has also allowed me to deal with any issues the parent needs to bring up whether they are positive or negative.
