We plan each day around the needs and interests of every individual child, enabling each child to develop at a rate that suits them.  However the overall structure and rhythm of the day remains the same, as we know this contributes to a secure environment for children as they will know what to expect and therefore how to behave.

The rooms are set up with the children’s age and stage of development in mind, and the focus will be to enable them to explore, develop, learn and create in a way that is right for them.  Our nursery practitioners will ensure that they know each child through talking to parents and playing with them, and plan activities that will engage and interest each child, extend their skills and experience, and of course, make sure they have fun!

Wherever possible, we like to be able to allow children to choose whether they play indoors or outdoors.  If the environment does not allow this, the children are given as many opportunities as possible throughout the day to explore and play outdoors.

Morning

Morning starts with the hustle and bustle of arrivals, breakfast is offered to the early birds, and our staff are trained and experienced to settle children into nursery.  Staff ensure they know the children in their care, and will encourage them to join in or select an activity or area of play that they particularly enjoy. This is an important time for sharing information about children to ensure that nursery practitioners know how well a child has slept, or whether they have been upset during the morning for any reason.

Drinks and healthy snacks are offered to children during the morning.

Lunch

Lunch is generally around 11.30am.   We understand how important it is to eat in family groupings, talking about our meal, and making it a relaxing and enjoyable time for everyone.  Our practitioners eat with the children where possible, and parents often comment how they are delighted with the range of healthy meals their child will eat when sitting alongside their friends!

Sleep time

Younger babies will probably need a number of sleeps during the day, and as they get older this will reduce to one sleep, usually after lunch.  We will always endeavour to enable a child to sleep when they want to, and will also work with parents to establish a routine that suits the need of the child.  We set up our rooms so that babies and children can sleep within the room, we find this to be a benefit, because it means children can sleep when they need to, and we are able to supervise them more easily.

Tea-time

At about 3.30pm the children sit down to tea, although a little lighter than lunch, this meal still consists of a main course and a pudding.

Home-time

When parents arrive to take their children home, the practitioners will make sure they are available to share any information about the children’s day, as well as pass on any important messages.

Relationships
We understand that the most important factor for providing a secure environment for babies is their relationship with a nurturing carer.  We know that babies need a familiar and trusted adult who will support their social and emotional development, and this in turn enables the baby to explore their environment and become a competent learner.

Communication

Communication is an essential skill that is central to everything else that follows; the sooner children learn to communicate, the greater their capacity to learn in general. That’s why we introduced the ground breaking 'Sign With Your Baby` system. Based on simple hand gestures, it enables pre-speech children to communicate their needs and observations to us and to you, and speeds up the development of their verbal skills.

Exploration

One thing we all know about babies is how much they love to explore the new world they’ve been born into. The best way for them to do this is by interacting with that world, so we’ve created a range of unique activities that allows them to experiment and explore through different play and sensory experiences. All the while aided and encouraged by the very best staff!

Environment

You can’t separate learning from the learning environment. Each is critical to the other and by using natural materials such as muslin and silks, mood music, singing and clapping games and musical instruments, we create an atmosphere and mood for every aspect of the changing day, from stimulating playtime to a calming afternoon nap.

Learning

Babies learn first of all through their sense of touch. With our baby area ‘Treasure Baskets’, they can experience different textures, shapes, weights, sounds and smells during periods of undisturbed play that help develop trust and partnership between baby and carer.

Before you know it, babies become toddlers and the early stages of their development give way to a more physical, structured phase…

Continuous care

Toddlers like to know what is going to happen and what is expected of them, and although frustrating for parents, challenging the boundaries set is an important part of developing into themselves!

During this stage, development is rapid and rewarding, for children and parents alike. Crawling, walking, running, jumping, climbing, and all the while, learning. Our toddler rooms are equipped with toys and apparatus to aid and support their rapidly growing skills, opening a big wide world for them to explore and discover in complete safety.

Learning

As toddlers make sense of the world around them, they want to post, sort and transport objects  - filling bags or trailers with items that they can take somewhere else.  They will role play what they have seen happening around them, cooking, looking after a baby or simply dressing up!

Hats, bags and giant boxes are just some of the objects we use to encourage imagination and creativity during playtimes with music, picture books and finger rhymes helping to develop listening skills, rhythm and sound recognition.

Language

Babies and toddlers will already be skilful communicators, using a variety of skills to tell us what they want or need.  As they grow up, different children will learn to use language at slightly different rates.  We know that every child is a talker and to develop this we make sure that the nursery environment is print and language rich, through speaking, story telling, songs and rhymes.

As toddlers become pre-schoolers we respond with a focus on self-managed activities as part of day-to-day play, such as dressing up, ‘cooking’ in the play kitchen and developing their independence skills.

Messy play, hide and seek and memory games in the nursery are also introduced.  Safely managed and supervised, such activities nevertheless encourage respect, co-operation and personal choice and of course, they’re lots and lots of fun!
